The Dorf Haus, near Sauk City, is making the most of its recent inclusion in a newly-released Wisconsin supper club movie as well as a cook book by showcasing both on Thursday, October 1.
The Dorf Haus Supper Club Celebration-Bavarian Style will include the screening of a 50- minute documentary, “Old-Fashioned-The Story of Wisconsin Supper Clubs” which earned rave reviews at the Wisconsin Film Festival this spring. Filmmaker Holly De Ruyter, Chicago, will introduce her film. In addition, Madison author Mary Bergin will be signing her just-published cookbook featuring recipes from supper clubs around Wisconsin.
The Dorf Haus kicks off the supper club celebration with discounts on Wisconsin Brandy Old Fashioneds, a supper club favorite. The extensive buffet menu includes rouladen and liver pate, both featured in the recipe book, topped off with another supper club tradition-grasshoppers.
After the buffet, Holly De Ruyter will sign and sell her DVD and Mary Bergin will sign and sell her “Wisconsin Supper Club Cookbook”.
Rebecca Maier-Frey, a co-owner of the Dorf Haus, said supper clubs are a Wisconsin phenomenon, not found around the country.
“Although there are many definitions of a supper club, the Dorf Haus stands out as a classic, because our specials include fish on Friday nights, prime rib on Saturdays, and chicken on Sundays. We are not open at noon except on Sundays. We’re also a second-generation family owned restaurant. When both a documentary and a recipe book touting all things supper clubs came available at the same time, we decided to celebrate,” she said.
Cost is $40 for the buffet and movie including tax and gratuities. Registration is 5:30 p.m., buffet at 6:30 p.m., supper club movie at 7:30 p.m. For reservations, email dorfhaus@chorus.net or call (608)643-3980. More details at www.foodspot.com/dorfhaus and click events.
