Title: Supervisor – Ambulatory Care & PACU
FTE: Full time (1.0 FTE)
Schedule: Primarily Monday – Friday from 8:00 – 5:00 PM
POSITION SUMMARY
This position coordinates and evaluates patient care for the Surgery Center and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). This individual helps ensure the 24-hour delivery of high-quality services, manages resources and people, quality and performance improvement and serves as a role-model for SPH’s values and mission. The Ambulatory Care/PACU Supervisor provides direct patient care (30-50% of time) and maintains an expert knowledge base for nursing practice. Position consults with staff on patient conditions/situations, monitors clinical practice, works with staff to effect change and performs customer service and unit-specific administrative tasks. Position serves as back up to Director – Surgical Services in his/her absence.
POSITION TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Core Supervisor Responsibilities- Routinely provides services at the staff level during periods of staffing instability and as needed to remain competent at staff level.
- Directly oversees and addresses daily operational needs, typically for a single cost center.
- Conducts daily rounds on team members to ensure optimal workflow and addresses daily staffing needs.
- Evaluates staff daily workloads to ensure equitable distribution of work and to determine appropriate staffing levels.
- Establishes the work schedule for assigned area(s).
- Addresses staffing assignments on a daily basis, ensuring optimal workflows are implemented.
- Responsible for addressing human resource needs (e.g. interviewing, hiring, training and development, annual evaluations, etc.).
- Approves payroll for assigned team members.
- Under guidance of the director, coaches, counsels, and applies corrective action to employees as needed.
- Assists with development of policies, procedures, and productivity standards.
- Works directly with staff to maintain compliance with external regulations and internal policies.
- Works directly with staff to maintain quality service by enforcing quality and customer service standards, analyzing, and resolving quality and customer service problems, and recommending system improvements.
- Under the guidance of the director, sets goals for individual team members that are in alignment with the department’s and organization’s goals.
- Trains and onboards new hires to make sure they understand their roles. Communicates job expectations.
- Assists in budget development and monitors expenses as requested.
- Actively reviews staff use of materials, equipment, etc. and provides feedback to staff to ensure best use of resources.
- Coordinates and supervises day-to-day activities to ensure efficient and effective delivery of nursing services in collaboration with Surgical Services Director.
- Collaborates with Surgical Services Director in the development of standards of care and practice and assures the integration and implementation of such into day-to-day work processes.
- Serves as a resource to clinical staff and incorporating research findings into practice.
- Reinforces optimal service delivery based on SPH’s mission and assessed needs.
- Coordinates and collaborates with other leaders and clinical staff.
- Participates in coordinating patient assignments.
- Assumes management responsibilities in the absence of the Surgical Services Director.
- Ensures compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
- Effectively manages patient satisfaction and service excellence initiatives. Leads the department’s customer service team.
- Identifies and successfully addresses opportunities for improving departmental operations, monitoring outcomes, and providing feedback when needed.
- Collaborates with other leaders and serves on Association-wide performance improvement activities and Lean Six Sigma projects affecting MSP.
- Identifies and reacts to safety concerns and evaluates the impact of related responses.
- Addresses event reports and analyzes strategies for appropriate follow-up.
- Shows initiative and supports requirements necessary for successful outcomes of Quality Improvement Measures.
- Participates in developing and implementing organizational strategies to address opportunities to improve the delivery and cost efficiency of health care to patients.
- Performing the duties of Staff Registered Nurse as indicated in that job description.
- Supports ongoing work for regulatory compliance by our accrediting agency and is a key member of the team during the accreditation survey.
Education:- Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited college.
- Preferred: Master’s Degree.
- Required: 3-5 years clinical experience with the most recent experience occurring within the last 2 years.
- Preferred: Experience in critical care, PACU, or emergency department desirable. Supervisory and/or leadership experience.
- Required: State of Wisconsin Registered Nurse license.
- Preferred: Membership in American Society of Perianesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) or The Wisconsin Society of Perianesthesia Nurses (WISPAN).
- Required: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within months of hire. Basic Life Support within 3 months of hire. Pediatric Life Support (PALS) or Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS)within 1 year of hire.
