Title: Supervisor – Nursing Administration
FTE: 1.0 (40 hours per week)
Schedule: Primarily Monday-Friday from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM with evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed
POSITION SUMMARY
This position is a registered nurse who has responsibility for the supervision of nursing staff in the Nursing Administration department. This position helps ensure delivery of high-quality services, manages resources and people, quality and performance improvement and serves as a role-model for SPH’s values and mission. In addition, this position functions as the clinical liaison between the House Supervisors and hospital nursing staff. The Supervisor will provide direct patient care as needed and maintains an expert knowledge base for nursing practice. This position consults with providers and staff to monitor clinical practice, works with providers and staff to effect change, and performs customer service duties. The position is also responsible for oversight of general administrative duties such as payroll, performance evaluations, recruitment, and scheduling.
POSITION TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical Practice and Service Delivery:- Assumes primary responsibility for assigned programs, projects, or tasks. Such assignments may include, but are not limited to: trauma level designation, emergency preparedness, new service development, etc.
- Actively participates as lead or work group member in planning activities associated with design or implementation of new programs or services.
- Utilizes, organizes, and effectively interprets/analyzes data, including the creation of reports that are audience-accessible, to inform decisions around healthcare delivery.
- Serves as accountable for all aspects of hospital operations in the absence of executive and departmental leadership.
- Serves on medical staff or other committees as assigned.
- Serves as a role model, demonstrating effective patient care, leadership and professional behavior.
- Collaborates with other clinical and organizational leadership in the development of standards of care and practice, policies and procedures, and assures the integration and implementation of such into day-to-day work processes.
- Serves as a resource to clinical staff; ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory standards and incorporating research findings into practice.
- Fulfills staff nurse duties, performing patient care, as needed, as referenced in the House Supervisor job description.
- Reinforces optimal service delivery based on SPH’s mission and assessed needs of the department.
- Reinforces SPH service excellence standards in the daily work of the department staff.
- Coordinates and collaborates with providers, other leaders and clinical staff.
- Works with the CNO to develop capital and operating budgets.
- Identifies and participates in the resolution of recurring operational deficiencies, focuses on improving workflow and eliminating waste both within the nursing units and between clinical and support departments.
- Ensures optimal use of supplies, space, and equipment through observation and education.
- Monitors fiscal reports in collaboration with the CNO.
- Provides day-to-day assistance in overseeing nursing staff across nursing departments, overseeing workflow and ensuring effective throughput.
- Performs payroll functions.
- Participates in the recruiting and hiring of nursing staff and facilitates new employee onboarding and orientation.
- Evaluates employee performance as assigned and ensures competency.
- Works with the CNO and Nursing Directors to provide coaching, counseling, development, and recognition to nursing staff.
- Creates an environment that encourages recruitment and retention of clinical employees.
- Manages and improves staff engagement.
- Responsible for ensuring nursing staff compliance with all SPH-required activities.
- Manages staffing, scheduling, and daily workflow ensuring optimal patient and provider experience and resource management.
- Promotes and facilitates the development of interdisciplinary relationships with other members of the care team.
- Engages in quality and safety rounding to ensure CMS and other regulatory standards are met.
- Engages in development of Root Cause Analysis (RCA) as part of quality improvement and participates in continuous quality improvement initiatives.
- Assists CNO and nursing directors with patient experience, staff engagement and service excellence initiatives.
- Identifies and successfully addresses opportunities for improving nursing workflows, monitoring outcomes and providing feedback when needed.
- Identifies and reacts to patient safety concerns and evaluates the impact of related responses.
- Addresses patient safety event reports and analyzes strategies for appropriate follow-up.
Education:- Required: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN)
- Preferred: Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN)
- Required: Greater than 3 years of bedside nursing in a hospital setting
- Preferred: Previous supervisory and/or leadership experience.
- Required: Current licensure as a registered nurse in the state of Wisconsin
- Preferred: None
- Required: Basic Life Support (BLS) within 3 months of appointment; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within 6 months of appointment.
