    Title:  Unit Secretary/CNA or EMT – ER/Urgent Care
    FTE:  1.0 FTE (40 hours per week)
    Schedule:  6:45 AM – 3:15 PM, Monday through Friday
    Holiday Rotation: Per Unit Guidelines
    Weekend Rotation:  N/A
    On Call Requirements:  N/A
    The Emergency Department Unit Secretary collaborates with the clinical team to coordinate all aspects of patient care and transition out of the hospital setting.  The Unit Secretary is responsible for performing duties related to patient admission, transfer and discharge.  Additionally, the Unit Secretary is responsible for communication with patients, guests and staff (internal and external to SPH), electronic health record maintenance, and other duties of a clerical nature under the direction of the Emergency Department Director and nursing staff.  This position also includes direct patient care on an as needed basis and requires either a CNA or EMT license.

    A prime importance of this position is the ability to maintain control and order under stressful conditions and periods of high unit activity, while utilizing effective and respectful communication with patients, families and the health care team.

    1. Serve as a communication link between departments and other organizations using a variety of communication technologies.
    2. Answer phones.
    3. Perform a variety of clerical functions including patient documentation, communications, record keeping and retrieval, and registration of patients.
    4. Maintains a printed copy of the on-call provider schedule per SPH policy.
    5. Orders supplies for the department including office supplies, procedural supplies and various other equipment or supply needs.
    6. Assists with department scheduling; communicating and coordinating scheduling needs for the upcoming shifts.
    7. Retrieves electronically transmitted EKGs and faxed reports for incoming patients and communicates with nursing staff and physician.
    8. Assists Director with process improvement projects, record keeping and department initiatives.
    9. Participate in patient care interventions and personal care procedures for patients under the direction of the Registered Nurse.     Duties include:?
    • Documenting vital signs, including pulse, respiratory rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturations.
    • Performing safety checks and assisting patients with ambulation.
    • Prepare patients, equipment and supplies for specific procedures, providing manual assistance as required.
    • Collecting, delivering and conducting routine tests on patient specimens.
    • Assisting with personal hygiene; bathing.
    • Assisting with ambulation
    • Assisting with bowel and bladder elimination
    • Participating in nutritional activities
    1. Perform approved dressings and wound care.
    2. Report changes in a patient’s physical or mental status to the nurse.
    3. Ensure a clean and safe patient environment equipped with adequate supplies for each patient.
    4. Provide care to patient of all socio-economic status, including young, old, confused, dying, multi-racial, and those in isolation.
    5. Care for patients' family members in a caring and sensitive manner.
    6. Document care provided, and actions taken in a timely and appropriate manner. 
    7. Float to other units as necessary.
    8. Attend a minimum of 75% of unit meetings. 
    9. Participate in education by attending in-services.
    10. Maintain knowledge of safety policies and reports codes as needed.
    11. Other duties as assigned to include assisting with projects and tasks that can be performed at the work station.
