  • Volunteer Opportunities at Harrisburg Troy Historical Society

    Posted: 09/06/2022

The Harrisburg-Troy Historical Society (HTHS) wouldn't exist without volunteers.  The Board of Directors are all volunteers and we are thankful for all of you who have volunteered your time and talents over the past years.  We would welcome your continued help and invite others to volunteer as well.  We believe you will not only be helping HTHS to continue to provide this historical site but you will receive rewards in doing so.  Below is a list of some of the opportunities to help - whether it's once a year (or more) we would so appreciate your help!

    - Open Houses - Greeters are needed to be present in the school and museum when the site is open to the public - no specific duties other than bringing a welcoming smile.  One of the Board members will be there to open the buildings and to close/lock the buildings at the end.  It can be a very rewarding experience to hear the visitors stories.

    • Building & Grounds - We are thankful to have a company that provides free lawn mowing at the historical site however periodically there are upkeep projects to be completed.  Anyone who might be willing to help with weeding or perhaps when there's a specific need - you would be contacted to see you'd be willing/able to help out on a specific project.
    • Food Stands/Fund Raising - To help maintain the site and keep it viable into the future, HTHS needs to bring in funds for the various associated expenses.  We've held brat stands, been on the route of Farm Art Dtour, both require people to help.  For example, when the brats stand(s) are held, we need folks to sell brats, help cook, set up and take down all of which are so much easier when we have many hands and you can commit to help one to four hours - any time is appreciated.
    • Housekeeping - Just like in our homes we need to "Spring Clean".  Each spring the School and Museum need a good cleaning; sweeping or vacuuming, dusting, etc.
    - Light Up the School - As many of you are aware the school, museum and grounds are beautifully decorated for the holiday season.  It takes many hours to accomplish stringing the lights and putting up decorations and again, many hands make "light" work! The decorating is done over Thanksgiving weekend.  Any help with this project would be greatly appreciated.

If you have any questions or are willing to volunteer for one of the above opportunities, please contact Sandy Schlender, 608-643-4236 or schlenders@hotmail.com.  Your help is and will be so appreciated.  Thank you!!
