Sauk City Riverfront Park

New in 2019, Riverfront Park in Sauk City features a new playground, splash pad, concession/restroom building, and renovated soccer fields. The splash pad spans 2,250 square feet and includes 14 interactive features!

 

 

Dr. Evermor's Forevertron Sculpture Park

Explore fantastical machines made from salvaged factory parts by self-taught artist Dr. Evermor. The park includes dozens of mechanical creatures ranging from waist-high to 20 feet tall, along with disintegration chambers, spaceship gun turrets, and huge contraptions reminiscent of prehistoric or space-age insects. The sculpture garden is open to the public, but it’s recommended to call ahead before visiting.

Highway 113, just south of Merrimac

Wisconsin’s only free ferry, the Merrimac Ferry, provides car ferry service across the beautiful Wisconsin River. The trip takes about 7 minutes, though wait times may vary. The ferry carries up to 15 cars, and trailers, motorcycles, bicycles, and hikers are welcome (no semis). It operates seasonally from ice-out to ice-in—roughly the end of March through the end of November—24 hours a day.

Lake Wisconsin

This 9,000-acre lake, near Merrimac and Lodi, offers public boat access on the east shore off County Road V. Anglers will find walleye, northern pike, Muskie, bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, and smallmouth bass. Lake Wisconsin is part of the Wisconsin River system, reaches a maximum depth of 40 feet, and provides 57 miles of shoreline for boating, fishing, and water recreation.

Crystal Lake spans 500 acres and features public access on the northwest shore off Highway 60. The lake is known for bluegill, crappie, and largemouth bass fishing, with a maximum depth of 12 feet.

Taliesin Preservation, Inc. preserves the buildings, artifacts, landscape, and legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright, America’s premier architect and Wisconsin native. Tours run from May 1 through October 31 and include five types of guided experiences. Because the Taliesin Estate is privately owned, it is only accessible via guided tour. Many tours sell out in advance—reservations are required.

Historic Sauk City Walking & Wheels Tour

Take a self-guided tour of Historic Sauk City, the first incorporated village in Wisconsin. Print a guide from the website or pick up a copy at the Sauk Prairie Riverway Welcome Center. You can also tour for free using an iPhone or iPad via the ARIS app:

  • Open the app and sign up for an ARIS account.

  • Search for the game “Sauk City Tour” and select play.

  • Tours typically start at Sauk City Historic Park but may be started anywhere along the route.

Wisconsin Scenic Byway 60

Follow Wisconsin’s 100-mile Scenic Byway 60 from the Empire Prairie to the Mighty Mississippi along the Lower Wisconsin River. Witwen Park, set on former church grounds with historic white buildings, is a quiet, picturesque retreat next to Honey Creek. The park hosts a Summer Concert Series each year, providing the perfect setting to enjoy live music with friends, neighbors, and family on soft summer evenings.
