Title: Exercise Instructor - Aqua and/or Studio-Based Classes

POSITION SUMMARY
Responsible for leading safe and effective classes, with appropriate variety and progression Provides instruction, coaching and supervision to the participants during scheduled group exercise activities.
 
POSITION TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Observe, practice, research or study as necessary to acquire or update skills/knowledge for each class.
2. Prepare appropriate lesson plans for each class.
3. Arrive early enough to set up equipment and greet participants prior to each class.
4. Return all equipment to appropriate storage locations, and ensure area is neat and clean before leaving.
5. Perform walk-through cleanup of locker room after class.
6. Follow procedure for finding substitute instructor in event of expected absence.
7. Assist with obtaining and updating medical history information, emergency contact information and photos for each participant.
8. Report equipment and facility failures to supervisor.
9. Maintain current CPR certification and renew other certifications, as required.
10. Provide safe, effective exercise classes with appropriate variety and progression.
11. Motivate participants and strive for participation retention of 100%.
12. Be aware of the medical history of each participant and modify instruction accordingly.
13. Begin and end classes on time.
14. Provide an educational component to class.
15. Be observant and sensitive of participant’s needs and safety.
16. Maintain accurate attendance report for each class.
17. Make necessary announcements to keep participants informed of registration policy changes, etc.
18. Handle on site customer concerns and complaints; involve supervisor as appropriate.
19. Attend training sessions and staff meetings.
20. Participate in performance review process.
21. Attend workshops and trainings, as available.

• Required:  Basic Life Support (BLS). Lifeguard certification required within 6 months of hire.
• Preferred:  Certification as group exercise instructor or leader from a nationally recognized accredited certify organization (ACE, ACSM, NSCA, and CPT). Other certifications in exercise and wellness desirable.
