    New Year, New (KNOW) You!

What if this New Year you didn’t find a New You and instead you got to Know You?

That’s right, let’s make this year about getting to know who you truly are instead of trying to be the new you that everyone else is telling you to be.

Have you ever thought about how well you actually know yourself?

Oftentimes my clients have this feeling like they're going through the motions day in and day out. There isn’t something inherently “wrong” with their life. Everything is “fine”, but it almost feels like they're faking it through life and something feels a little off.

If you’re feeling this way it can mean that you are no longer in alignment with who you are and where you’re going. This can start showing up in your life in many different ways including:

~ Feeling overwhelmed regularly by all of life’s to-do’s

~ Exhaustion, not just at the end of the day, but throughout your day

~ Strained relationships with family, friends, and/or colleagues

    ~ Frustration at work

    ~ Physical health challenges

If you’re nodding your head, then you may be asking, how do I get to know myself and why is that going to help me feel less overwhelmed, have better relationships, be excited about work, and feel more fulfilled in my life?

Let’s start with the why and move into the how.

Let’s be real, when you say yes to something you really wanted to say no to, you end up resenting the other person or getting mad at yourself. You do this over and over again, oftentimes several times throughout the day, every single day. This begins the snowball effect and soon you’re overwhelmed, being short with the people around you and maybe even yelling at your family. You may be eating your feelings, and/or drinking away the stresses of the day.

Does this sound familiar? You’re not alone and this is a judgment free zone. You don’t have to be hard on yourself AND you don’t have to keep perpetuating this cycle either.

When you know yourself better you will start saying yes to what's in alignment with who you are and no to what is out of alignment. You don’t feel bad about saying no, and you feel great when you say yes!

So let’s get to the how in knowing yourself.

These are 3 tips you can use daily to know yourself this year so you can feel at peace, know your personal power, and influence change because you’re in alignment with your purpose:

    1. Add pauses in your schedule. Now, I know some of you might already be saying, “there is no way I can fit one more thing in my schedule.” Hear me out. Before that next meeting of yours, whether it’s on Zoom or in person, take 10 seconds to pause and take three deep breaths. Notice your feet in your shoes, your bottom on your seat, or maybe the air going in and out of your body. This allows you to get out of that autopilot mode so you can be present. You can certainly go beyond this.  Start practicing adding pauses throughout your day.
    2. Journal. Again hear me out. Journaling does not require you to write for 20-30 minutes. In fact, your journaling doesn’t have to be sentences or even words for that matter. I had a client that was struggling to journal and decided to draw instead of write. I encourage you to do 5 minutes in the morning and 5 minutes at night. In the morning you can reflect on 3 things you’re grateful for, 3 affirmations, and 3 ways your day is going to be amazing. At night you can reflect on 3 amazing things that happened that day.
    3. Take some time this year to try something new and fun. I encourage you to find something that you can do several times a week or at least once a week. This could be something you’ve been wanting to try for a long time like a class to learn something new. It could even be something you loved doing as a child. This year I'm dancing more! Each day I take a five-minute dance break in the middle of the day. It wakes me up, brings me joy and allows me to tap into my creativity.

These are simple tips that will get you started. It oftentimes requires some deeper healing with the support of a coach or therapist along with connection in a community of like-minded people to see a deeper transformation.

This is the foundation of my work with clients; helping them get to know who they truly are. When they do, they feel an inner peace, which allows them to claim their personal power so they can take aligned action towards influencing change for themselves and others around the world.

Taking some time everyday to step out of “the grind” of doing and giving yourself the space to be; BE present. BE creative. BE you. This is how you get to know you.

When you are in alignment you create goals and resolutions based on who you truly are instead of who you’re trying to be for other people. This allows more ease and flow into your life. You don't feel as exhausted or overwhelmed because you're doing it from an internal place of alignment instead of an external place of others expectations.

Which tip are you going to start implementing today?
