    POSITION SPECIFICS
    Title:  OB Technician
    FTE:  0.75 (60 hours per pay period)
    Schedule: 12-hour night shifts, 6:45pm - 7:15pm
    Holiday Rotation:  Per Unit Guidelines
    Weekend Rotation: Every 3rd weekend
    On Call Requirements: N/A
     
    POSITION SUMMARY
    The OB Technician performs duties to ensure a well-organized unit by managing the flow of resources.  The position also provides direct patient care under the direction of the Registered Nurse.  In addition, will be responsible for support during complicated or anticipated high risk vaginal births and other births as needed. Duties include establishment and maintenance of sterile field for surgical procedures meeting the high standards of SPH, preparing surgical suite, handling surgical instruments and equipment during routine and emergency operative cases, and assisting surgeons as directed during procedures.
     
    POSITION TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
     
    Certified Nursing Assistant and Unit Secretary Responsibilities

    1. Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, provide direct patient care to mothers and newborns.
    2. Answer telephones and respond to call lights.
    3. Take vitals on both mothers and newborns according to policy.
    4. Perform newborn screening, including glucose and hearing screens.
    5. Remove foley catheters and hepwell.
    6. Perform set up, provide explanations, and perform clean up for procedures, including circumcisions.
    7. Set-up for newborn bilitherapy.
    8. Participate in bedside report.
    9. Serve as communication link between other departments.
    10. Perform SOS staffing calls using the Send Word Now.
    11. Prepare, maintain and take down charts per unit protocol.
    12. Manage and enter data into OB dashboard.
    13. Scan in documentation to the EHR
    14. Manage tasks of the infant security system
    15. Assist in keeping the patient rooms, supply rooms, and hallways neat, clean, orderly, and stocked.
    16. Assist with discharge process such as a car seat check, accompanying a patient to their vehicle.
    17. Report changes in patient’s physical or mental condition to the nurse.
    18. Ensure a clean and safe patient environment equipped with adequate supplies for each patient.
    19. Document care provided per unit policies and actions taken in a timely and appropriate manner. 
    20. Comply with all SPH standards, policies, practices and procedures.  Is knowledgeable about safety policies and prepared to report codes as needed.
    21. Confirm permitted visitors in coordination with the Welcome Desk staff.
    22. Maintain a clean and orderly work area and entry vestibule.
    23. Monitor supplies, order, and report needs for additional supplies.
    24. Participate in education by attending in-services and attend 75% of the unit staff meetings.
    25. Complete facility requests as appropriate.
    26. Float to other units as necessary.
    27. Assist with other duties as assigned.
    Surgical Responsibilities
    1. Establish and maintains sterile field for surgical procedures, including C-Sections
    2. Plan, gather, and open instruments, equipment and supplies for surgical procedures.
    3. Open operating room and assist provider with emergent procedures.
    4. Perform set up for procedures, ready all instruments, equipment and supplies for the case.
    5. Assist with prepping and sterile draping of patients.
    6. Assist surgeons during procedures by passing instruments, holding retractors, clamping tissues and "bleeders," and operating cameras and surgical equipment.
    7. Assist with closing of surgical wounds.
    8. Responsible for all counts along with RN.
    9. Assist with reprocessing and sterilization of all instruments.
    10. Assist with cleaning of equipment, surgical suites, and storage rooms.
    POSITION REQUIREMENTS
     
    Education:
    • Required: High School Degree of equivalent
    • Preferred: Specialized training beyond high school normally gained in a program of less than 18 months duration
    Experience:
    • Required: None
    • Preferred: Previous experience as a nursing assistant working with procedures in a sterile environment and/or operating room experience.
    Licenses and Registrations:
    • Required: Certified Nursing Assistant license required within 9 months from date of appointment.
    • Preferred: None
    Certification(s):
    • Required:  Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 3 months of hire date.  NRP within 6 months of hire.
